Bhoomi is a 1980 Indian comedy-drama film co-written, co-produced and directed by Shyam Benegal. It stars Shashi Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi (in her acting debut), Raaj Kumar and Smita Patil. The film's score was by Ravi who also wrote the lyrics for the Hindi song "Kitna Yaar Hai" . The story follows Ashok Kumar Paliwal (Smita Patil), a young widow in Bombay with three children who becomes engaged to Bachchan Jaipal Singh Khanna (Shashi Kapoor) to provide them with financial security. The two meet only on the day of their wedding, but Ashok neglects to tell his bride that he is already married. He must now go through the motions of their marriage until his first wife Anuradha Devi (Shabana Azmi) can send for her "manglik" gold chain which will allow him to start a new life with Ashok.The movie opens with a marriage between two strangers. They don't know each other's names nor do they care about it. The groom, Bachchan Jaipal Singh Khanna, is seen serving at the reception. He looks around 10 years older than his bride. He even knows that he is going to get married. He doesn't even know her name. However, she is waiting for him the next day to the wedding of his friend. The couple is taken to its room by taxi driver, who tells them that they will be gone for some time due to the wedding. The Bride's name is Ashok Kumar Paliwal and she has three children already born. Her husband had died long back leaving her without any money or anything. Bachchan Jaipal Singh Khanna comes with money and promises of food for his two children and promises of education for his daughter Anushika His wife was not interested in it . The next day Ashok is forced to marry her. He does everything to avoid this marriage, but he is unable to escape. Soon, they are married without any romance or love. They are exposed to each other for the first time on their wedding night. Ashok leaves for his home after leaving her at home but comes back later due to the reason that he forgot the knot of the Mangal Sutra . Later they start living together as husband and wife though Ashok has an affair with another girl played by Shabana Azmi who is having a relation with him since before his marriage. She pretends she loves him so she can have his money and gift which he had given her for their relation. Bhoomi is a beautiful film. It has the ability to hold the audience spellbound for its whole duration. The movie begins with an unnecessary drama. Shashi Kapoor's character marries according to his horoscope, not according to his heart. The movie would have been better without this opening segment. Later it turns out that Shashi Kapoor marries for money because he is badly in need of it to be able to go abroad for higher studies and become a Doctor, which would enable him to support his mother and sister. cfa1e77820
